The Ceremony to Commemorate Horace Wilson Who Introduced Baseball into Japan (Feb. 2, 2025)

On February 2nd, the ceremony to commemorate by Horace Wilson was held in Portland, Maine. Horace Wilson was from Maine and introduced baseball into Japan when he worked in Tokyo as a foreign expert in Meiji Government employ.
Firstly, Mr. Masataka Yoshida of Boston Red Sox visited Wilson’s birthplace in Gorham, Maine, with Consul General Takahashi. The family of Wilson’s descendants who live there welcomed Mr. Yoshida.
After that, the event and reception were held at University of Southern Maine (USM). Consul General Takahashi delivered an address with Hon. Ellie Sato of Maine House of Representatives, Mayor Mark Dion of Portland, President Jacqueline Edmondson of USM, President Ryan Shaffer of Japan-America Society of Washington D.C, and Ms. Theo Balcomb, family member of Horace Wilson, while President Bruce Stronach of Showa Boston served as the master of ceremonies. The reception was attended by many Maine residents involved in Maine-Japan relations and others.
