The Consulate General of Japan in Boston is seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual for the position of the Assistant for Economics / Science & Technology Section. This individual is primarily responsible for conducting research analysis on U.S. economic affairs. Principal Responsibilities:
- Assist the Consul for Economic Affairs and Science & Technology Officer in administrative duties. Examples are scheduling meetings, drafting letters and e-mails, writing speeches, making contacts with local government agencies, businesses, or other agencies, and assisting visiting delegations from Japan when they visit the New England area.
- Conduct basic research on regional economic development and international trade statistics.
- Disseminate information about Japanese economic and science policies and other related information to relevant local entities and respond to inquiries about Japan in economic and scientific areas.
- Assist with planning and setting up events such as trade shows, business forums, seminars, networking sessions, and diplomatic receptions.
- Monitor local news outlets for stories that are related to or could affect Japanese companies.
- Conduct surveys such as an annual survey of Japanese companies.
- Assist with translation of official documents.
- Manage the website effectively.
- Other duties as required, including jobs related to front office reception and consular services.
Essential qualifications and expertise
- Bachelor’s degree or aboveStrong analytical and written communication skills are imperative
- Basic knowledge of the economic and political situations in both Japan and New England, especially in the Greater Boston area.
- Strong computer skills, including extensive experience with Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel, and ability to create website articles
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Flexibility and ingenuity
Desirable qualifications and experience - Degree in one of the following areas: Economics, International Relations, International Business, Japanese/East Asian studies, or a related field
- Specialist knowledge or working experience regarding research analysis, public relations, or communication strategy
- Japanese language ability (language proficiency may be tested)
Working Hours and Benefits
Working hours: 9:00 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday (Partially remote during the COVID-19 pandemic)
