When : 10/2 ~ 3 (2 days)
Where : Virtual (online)

NASA International Space Apps Challenge (NASA ISAC), a NASA incubator innovation program, is an international mass collaborative hackathon focused on space exploration that takes place in hundreds of cities around the world. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space. NASA is leading this global collaboration along with a number of additional government collaborators. Binnovative, a Boston-based non-profit organization, has organized NASA ISAC in Boston since 2014 bringing together hundreds of Bostonians and Japanese people together in a spirit of collaboration.

NASA ISAC 2021, to be held on October 2-3, will be virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic and presents a unique opportunity to be part of a global virtual hackathon community that embraces collaboration across borders, sectors, and cultures to bring about paradigm-shifting innovation. Each year, NASA comes up with themes that provide guidelines on the problems they wish participants to solve. The 2021 NASA ISAC theme is “Power of Ten!” as this is the tenth anniversary of NASA ISAC.

This year’s hackathon features exciting challenges such as Artfully Illuminated Asteroids, COVID-19: Calculate the Risk, Discovering Science Connections, and many, many more. The hackathon participants need not be technical -- people from all backgrounds and experiences participate each year. This year we will have a guest judge, Dr. Masami Onoda, Director of JAXA (The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Association) Washington D.C. Office. Dr. Onoda has extensive experience in international affairs, satellite applications and industry relations.

As part of your preparation for the hackathon, you will be able to meet teammates and create their team, talk with other participants and space agency experts in our online chat rooms. Every year we have a wide range of attendees in terms of ages, skill sets and so on. Last year, ISAC Boston had young attendees such as junior high school students and they enjoyed it!
