The Japanese Government confers the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun on Professor Jerome Isaac Friedman
 
On April 29th, 2016 (Japan Time), the Government of Japan announced the foreign recipients of the 2016 Spring Imperial Decorations. Professor Jerome Isaac Friedman of MIT is one of the foreign recipients and he received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the relationship between Japan and the United States in the fields of science and technology, and founding and promoting the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST).
