On the 14th, the opening ceremony of the Newport Black Ships Festival was held in Newport, RI at Touro Park. In attendance were the President of Japan-America Society in Rhode Island Mr. Viner, Consul General Michii, Rhode Island Lt. Governor McKee, Newport Mayor Winthrop, Shimoda city Mayor Mr. Fukui, Hakodate city Mayor Mr. Kudo, the President of U.S. Naval War College Mr. Harley as well as officials from the Japanese Self-Defense Training Squadron, which was staying in Newport for this event. Those in attendance also gave floral tribute to the Matthew Perry Monument.
