Event Report: Cultural Evening “The Concept of Commons Garden – A Space of Shared Empathy” (August 27, 2026)

On August 27th, the Consulate General of Japan in Boston held our monthly cultural evening where we showcase various aspects of Japanese culture to the broader public. This month's event featured a presentation by landscape architect and CEO of Umebachien Co., Ltd., Mr. Seiho Umeno, who visited Boston from Kyoto.
Mr. Umeno's presentation highlighted the intersection of Japanese history, philosophy, and nature that has shaped the Japanese gardens we know and appreciate today. Drawing on the concept of gardens as spaces for cultivating empathy and human connection, he explored how gardens can serve as a medium for new possibilities in international cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Approximately 30 attendees gathered to listen and engage in a thoughtful Q&A session. Participants highly praised the event, expressing that they had gained a deeper appreciation for Japanese gardens and a greater understanding of the cultural values, traditions, and philosophies they embody. The evening provided a meaningful opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue and further strengthened connections between the Japanese and local communities.
