Reception to Strengthen Collaboration Between Kanagawa Prefecture and Massachusetts in the Life Sciences Field (July 21, 2026)

On July 21, Consul General Takahashi hosted a reception in conjunction with the seminar “Healthcare New Frontier and Beyond,” which was held on the occasion of Governor Yuji Kuroiwa’s visit to the Boston area.
Approximately 70 participants attended the reception, including Kanagawa Governor Kuroiwa and officials from the Kanagawa Prefectural Government, representatives from the Kanagawa University of Human Services, and Shonan Health Innovation Park(iPark). Also in attendance were Massachusetts State Representative Erika Uyterhoeven and Chris Tanaka, anchor of “WBZ News Mornings,” both of whom have family roots in Kanagawa Prefecture; State Representative Amy Mah Sangiolo; Jeevan Ramapriyan, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment; and other government officials, researchers, academics, and industry professionals from both Japan and the United States. The reception provided an opportunity for lively networking among participants.
In his remarks, Consul General Takahashi reflected on the historic significance of the Japan–US Treaty of Peace and Amity (Kanagawa Treaty), signed in Yokohama in 1854, which marked a pivotal turning point in Japan's opening to the world and modernization, and laid the foundation for the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States. He also highlighted the wide-ranging initiatives promoted by Kanagawa Prefecture, including Japan-U.S. collaboration through Shonan Health Innovation Park(iPark), as expanding new possibilities for cooperation between the two regions. He expressed his hope that the partnership between Kanagawa Prefecture and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will continue to grow and flourish across a broad range of fields, including life sciences.
