Raising of the Japanese National Flag (Hinomaru) at Boston City Hall Plaza and Mayor Michelle Wu’s Proclamation of “Japan National Day” (March 9, 2026)

On March 9, the Japanese National Flag (Hinomaru) was raised at Boston City Hall Plaza to celebrate His Majesty the Emperor of Japan’s birthday, which falls on February 23. Approximately 70 people attended the event, including Consul General Takahashi, Massachusetts State Representative Amy Mah Sangiolo, Councilor Ed Flynn of Boston City Council, members of consular missions, and members of the general public.
Ms. Chihiro Asano, a Japanese opera singer, performed the national anthems of both the United States and Japan.
After sunset, Boston City Hall was illuminated in red and white, reflecting the colors of the Japanese National Flag.
On this occasion, Mayor Michelle Wu issued a proclamation designating February 23, 2026, as “Japan National Day” in the City of Boston. In addition, the Boston City Council issued a resolution recognizing Consul General Takahashi and the Consulate General of Japan in Boston for their contributions to ongoing cultural exchange and the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States.
