Reception to Commemorate the Launch of the Japan–New England Innovation Collaboration Platform ‘J‑NEXUS’ (February 9, 2026)
February 10, 2026
On February 9, Consul General Takahashi hosted a reception to commemorate the launch of “J‑NEXUS: Japan‑New England Nexus for Innovation,” a new initiative of the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston aimed at further promoting economic and science‑and‑technology exchange between Japan and the New England region.
Approximately 200 Japanese companies are currently operating in Massachusetts, and collaboration with local research institutions and startups—particularly in the life sciences and biotech sectors—has been rapidly expanding. Fields designated by the Government of Japan as priority areas, including AI, quantum technology, biotechnology, space, and fusion, are precisely those in which New England leads the world and where deeper Japan‑U.S. cooperation is anticipated.
The Consulate‑General of Japan in Boston has long served as a bridge between Japan and New England, working to promote cross‑sectoral exchange. To further “visualize” this role and to help accelerate Japan‑U.S. collaboration in both business and research, the Consulate launched the new J‑NEXUS initiative.
At the core of the J‑NEXUS initiative is the publication of the “J‑NEXUS Quarterly(SHIKIHO).” In cooperation with organizations such as JETRO New York and AMED, the Quarterly will provide updates on research and development activities by Japanese companies and researchers active in New England, highlight initiatives by local governments and institutions that support innovation and startups, feature the latest event information, and offer foundational data and analysis on the regional innovation ecosystem.
The launch event brought together approximately 90 participants from industry, academia, and support organizations, who expressed their hopes and expectations for new opportunities for collaboration between the two regions.
The Consulate‑General of Japan in Boston will continue to develop J‑NEXUS as a platform for fostering next‑generation innovation partnerships from New England—a region with a rich tradition of intellectual and human exchange between Japan and the United States—together with all our partners.
