Consul General Takahashi’s Visit to the Grave of Commodore M. Perry (Oct 26, 2025)

                        On October 26, Consul General Takahashi attended and delivered a greeting at the wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of Commodore Matthew Perry held in Newport, Rhode Island. Commodore Perry led the “Black Ship Expedition” to Japan in 1853 that ended Japan's isolationism and signed the Japan–US Treaty of Peace and Amity (Convention of Kanagawa) between Japan and the United States in 1854.
In addition to Consul General Takahashi, the ceremony was attended by the Shimoda City delegation, including Mr. Sadami Yamada, Shimoda City Superintendent of Education, Mayor Charlie Holder of Newport, Dr. Matthew Perry, a descendant of Perry, representatives of the U.S. Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, among others.
Mayor Holder and Superintendent Yamada laid a wreath on behalf of the Newport-Shimoda sister cities, and junior high school students from the Shimoda City delegation offered bouquets at the grave of Commodore M. Perry.
