Massachusetts House of Representatives Designates “Japan Day” (May 6, 2025)
May 6, 2025
The Massachusetts House of Representatives recently adopted its first-ever resolution celebrating friendship with Japan, officially designating May 7th as "Japan Day" in recognition of John Manjiro’s (NAKAHAMA Manjiro’s) landing in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1843. The resolution was introduced by State Representative Amy Mah Sangiolo, a Japanese-American legislator.
On May 6th, to commemorate the passage of this resolution, Consul General Takahashi co-hosted a reception at the Massachusetts State House in collaboration with the House Asian Caucus. At the reception, a similar proclamation issued by Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll on this occasion was also introduced.
Consul General Takahashi expressed his gratitude, stating that the resolution and proclamation symbolize the friendship and cooperation between Japan and the United States, as well as between Japan and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He also noted that this year marks the 35th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Hokkaido and Massachusetts, and emphasized his commitment to further strengthening these ties while honoring the history and efforts built by predecessors.
The reception was attended by many guests, including state legislators, Japanese-Americans, and Japanese nationals residing in the region, who enjoyed Japanese cuisine and deepened their exchanges in a friendly atmosphere
