“Japan Day” Resolution at the Rhode Island State House (April 1, 2025)
April 2, 2025

On April 1st, the Rhode Island Legislature adopted a resolution to designate March 31st as "Japan Day," following the resolution passed last May to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the United States. The Senate resolution was introduced by State Senator Linda Ujifusa, and the House resolution was introduced by Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy.
The resolution recognized the active relations between Japan and the United States, and between Japan and Rhode Island, across various fields, such as politics, economics, and culture, and reaffirmed the commitment to further strengthening these ties.
Before the House adopted the resolution, Consul General Takahashi delivered a speech in which he expressed that the Consulate would work together with the people of Rhode Island as a “convening power” connecting Japan and Rhode Island, and as a catalyst for new developments.
To mark this occasion, a reception was held in the House Lounge, hosted by Consul General Takahashi and emceed by Honorary Consul of Japan in Bristol Steve Aveson. The reception was attended by many guests, including House Speaker Joe Shekarchi, Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, State Senator Ujifusa, Speaker Pro Tempore Kennedy, Newport Mayor Charlie Holder, state legislators, members of friendship associations, and representatives from the U.S. Naval War College and Japanese companies, as well as Japanese language teachers and members of the Japanese community in Rhode Island. Attendees enjoyed Japanese cuisine, such as Golden-eye Seabream sushi from Shimoda City, sister city of Newport, while deepening exchanges in a friendly atmosphere.
