May 31, 2024
On May 30th, the Rhode Island Legislature passed the first-ever resolution on Japan in the state to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between Japan and the United States. The Senate resolution was initiated by State Senator Linda L. Ujifusa, and the House resolution was initiated by Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy. The resolution affirms the commitment to further strengthening ties between Japan and the United States.
Before the House adopted the resolution, Consul General Suzuki gave a speech in which he spoke about the historical relationship between Rhode Island-native Commander Perry and Japan, and paid tribute to the cities of Newport and Bristol, as well as the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island, among others who have supported cross-cultural exchanges between Japan and the State of Rhode Island. The Consul General also expressed his hope that the Japan-US relationship that Admiral Perry established will continue to deepen as a global partner and grow based on people-to-people ties between Japan and Rhode Island.
Consul General Suzuki also took the opportunity to greet Governor Dan McKee.
