MEXT Scholarships Guidelines and Qualifications

Monbukagakusho, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) offers four different scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan.


Only US Citizens living in the SIX New England states may apply through Boston. US citizens living in other states should apply through the consulate responsible for their area. Non-US citizens should apply through the Japanese embassy in their country of citizenship.

This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend a year continuing their study of Japanese language or culture at one of several universities in Japan.

Deadline

Applications must be received at the Consulate General of Japan in Boston by February 26th, 2020.

Interview & Test Date

March 4th, 2020

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be from 18 to 29 years of age as of April 1 of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students in an American university.
  • Applicants must be studying Japanese language and/or culture as their major or minor, and must have a high level of Japanese language proficiency.

Terms of Scholarship

Applicants will receive an allowance for a 12-month tenure from September or October of the initial year to August or September of the following year (for example, September 2020 to August 2021).

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend for the period of the scholarship: 117,000 yen (subject to change)
  • Transportation to and from Japan (subject to change)
  • School fees (i.e., entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees) will be waived

Guidelines and Forms

 

 



 

This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend 18 or 24 months conducting independent research under a Japanese professor. Any field of study is eligible for the scholarship, but applicants must find a Japanese professor willing to supervise their research. However, this does not guarantee that the applicant will be placed with that professor.

  • Deadline for the Scholarships which begin in 2021: Applications must be received at the Consulate of Japan in Boston by 4:00pm on Wednesday, August 5, 2020

Interview & Test Date

  • Tuesday, August 11, 2020 (Tentative)

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be under 35 years of age as of April 1 of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must be university or college graduates.
  • Applicants must intend to continue a course of study previously begun, i.e. shall not begin study in a field new to the applicant.
  • Applicants must gain a pledge from a Japanese professor that he or she is willing to supervise the study of the applicant.
  • Applicants must learn and receive instruction in the Japanese language.

Terms of Scholarship

Applicants must choose one of the two following options:

  1. 24-month tenure from April of the initial year to March (for example, April 2021 to March 2023).
  2. 18-month tenure from October of the initial year to March (for example, October 2021 to March 2023).

Please note that recipients who choose the October departure are guaranteed their choice. However, recipients who choose the April departure may be delayed until October due to negotiation delays with their university.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be from 17 to 21 years of age as of April 1 of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must have graduated from high school by March of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must learn and receive instruction in the Japanese language.

Terms of Scholarship

Applicants will receive an allowance for a tenure of up to 3 years from April of the initial year to March of the second following year including one-year preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects(for example, April 2021 to March 2024).

  • transportation to and from Japan (subject to change)
  • school fees (i.e., entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees) will be waived

This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend up to 5 years at a Japanese college or university as an undergraduate degree student in one of 2 fields of study:

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be from 17 to 21 years of age as of April 1 of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must have graduated from high school by March of the year of departure.
  • Applicants must learn and receive instruction in the Japanese language.

Terms of Scholarship

Applicants will receive an allowance for a tenure of up to 5 years from from April of the initial year to March of the fifth following year (for example, April 2021 to March 2026, including the preliminary one-year instruction in the Japanese language and other subjects given immediately after arrival in Japan, except for those majoring in Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine or six-year course of Pharmacy, which term of scholarship is 7 years span>

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend of 117,000 yen for the period of the scholarship
  • transportation to and from Japan (subject to change)
  • School fees (i.e., entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition fees) will be waived
  • Grantees reside either at a Foreign Students House, a dormitory, or in a private home. Housing expenses vary, and are the responsibility of the grantee.
